Five players who have hit most no. of sixes in World Cups​

The 2019 World Cup is around the corner, and the excitement is only rising. So far, eleven editions of the World Cup have taken place, and on May 30th in the UK, the twelfth edition will begin. Meanwhile, a few of the players made their name on cricket's biggest stage with performances worth remembering forever. Off all the greatest batsmen who have graced the game, a handful of them made world records as well. Here, we will list the five players who have hit most no. of sixes in World Cups.

5. Sachin Tendulkar/Sanath Jayasuriya (27 sixes)

Two of the best openers in the past two decades - Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya are on the list of players who have hit most no. of sixes in World Cups. Sachin, only the second player after Javed Miandad to have played record six World Cups (1992-2011) has hit 27 sixes in total. Though he was someone was better off as a batsman who hits boundaries instead of sixes; Sachin still cracked up a few mind-boggling sixes in World Cups. Besides, Sachin has also played the most no. of matches for India in WC history - 45, scoring 2278 runs in total.
Sanath Jayasuriya, one of the most devastating cricketers, is equalled on most no. of sixes by a batsman in World Cups with Sachin. The left-handed opener, who was more of a lofted-shot player had played 38 matches in the mega event, scoring 1165 runs. In 2007 in the Caribbean, Sanath Jayasuriya last played for Sri Lanka in a 50-over World Cup.

4. Herschelle Gibbs (28 sixes)

The only batsman in history to have hit six sixes in an over in a World Cup, South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs is fourth on the list. Though he had represented the Proteas in only three World Cups (1999-2007), he had hit a total of 28 sixes. The right-handed batsman had played 25 matches and scored 1067 runs. Meanwhile, it was in 2007 WC during a group stage match against the Netherlands when Gibbs whacked six consecutive sixes off DLS Van Bunge (an off-spinner).

3. Brendon McCullum (29 sixes)

One of New Zealand's most exciting cricketers, Brendon McCullum also falls under this category. The former Kiwi captain had played four World Cups (2003-2015) and has smashed 29 sixes in total. Though he had been a recognisable player heading into any major event; it was McCullum's last World Cup at home in 2015, when he scored 328 runs in nine games, scoring 17 sixes. Meanwhile, in 34 matches played across four World Cups, McCullum scored 742 runs.

2. Ricky Ponting (31 sixes)

One of the most successful captains in cricket history, former Australia batsman, Ricky Ponting is second on the list of player with most no. of sixes in the World Cups. Ponting, who represented the Aussies in four World Cups (1999-2011) has scored 1743 runs in 46 matches. Besides, he has hit as many as 31 sixes in WC history. Meanwhile, in the finals of 2003 World Cup against India, he scored a match-winning 140* - smacking four fours and eight sixes.

1. Chris Gayle/Ab de Villiers (37 sixes)

Two of the powerhouses of batting - Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers are topping the list of players with most no. of sixes in World Cups. Gayle, who is the only active cricketer among all on the list, has featured in four World Cups since 2003. Regarded as the 'Universe Boss' and someone who can pile of sixes at will; the veteran Windies star has hit 37 sixes thus far. As he will retire after the 2019 World Cup, Gayle could add a dozen of monster hits to his tally.
Ab de Villiers, the former Protean star, has scored 37 sixes as well. It was during the 2015 World Cup group stage match against the Windies when Abd had scored a fastest 150 in World Cups - scoring 161* off 66 balls. In the meantime, he hit 17 fours and eight massive sixes.
